Where is a place to get cheap wood and carpet for a cat scratcher?

I decided to make her one cause I could make it my own design and might be able to same more money that way. Where is the best place to get cheap wood and like the indoor/outdoor carpet?

If you want just a scratching post, you can easily make one out of an old skid. (I mention skid, because you can often pick up an old wooden skid for free at many places). You might also check at any local construction sites - there's usually some scraps of lumber and plywood laying around, or in the dumpster. I'd make a base about 16" square or so, and the post about 16" to 20". That would give you a base large enough to keep it from tipping over, if you leave this as a freestanding unit. Screw it to the floor, and you can make the post taller. Instead of carpet, just get a length of rope, secure one end, and wrap the post with it. Oh, I'd make the post out of a couple of 2x4 scraps. Just screw up through the bottom of the base to secure the post to the base. The rope would be the only thing you'd have to purchase - look around the garage, you might have some. You can leave the base off, and just create a loop at the top with the rope and hang it from a door knob too. If you're going to secure one to the floor, then the base can be smaller - I'd just glue a layer of rope to the base too.

For something a bit fancier, like a cat tower, you can use a short length of the cardboard tubing they use to pour concrete piers (like under a garage floor). You can pick up small sections of carpet remnants from anyplace that sells carpet. Cut a piece of plywood to go in the ends of the tube (a jig saw would be handy for this), and another to go in the middle. Cut a hole in the side of the tube above the middle piece of plywood, large enough for your cat. Cover it all by stapling the carpet to it, and you're set.
