Why is my African Cichlid vibrating it's body rapidly?
it does it for a few seconds and then stops and then again and then stops. Is it retarded?
It was yellow with black stripes and then transformed to black and then back to normal.
The vibration is a form of visual display among african cichlids, predominantly mbuna species, and can convey several messages depending on the intended recepient (usually one or all fish within six inches of it).
Body vibration can be used as a form of visual threat (basically a warning). The cichlid will vibrate. If the other fish in it's immediate vicinity doesn't retreat, an attack or pursuit usually follows.
It can also be used as a technique to attract females. The males will shake, exhibit brilliant coloration and fan their fins in attempts to attract a mate. This behavior may ALSO be followed by an attack or pursuit if the female isn't receptive (or will lead to spawning if she is).
